Mongrel was a site specific show about Genghis Khan. The biggest challenges regarding this show were building a set that could survive the outdoors and traveling to an offsite location in the middle of a sculpture park. We needed a location that allowed a live fire pit, and we experimented with a lot of different methods of lighting the fire. We found a method that would work despite the humidity, would be actor safe, and would look reasonably authentic. The set was hand drilled into the ground with ground stakes and built to withstand bad weather. Most of the set was left outdoors each day, with props and furniture pieces taken inside. The props for this show were a pleasure to work on. I did a lot of research on Mongolian furniture, decor, and weaponry. I created a usable water sack, made simpler weapons look older and more period appropriate, and helped each furniture piece look like it had been well used and traveled with.
